5.3 Roles, responsibilities and authorities

Clause Criteria

Top management shall ensure that the responsibilities and authorities for relevant roles are assigned and communicated within the organization.
Top management shall assign the responsibility and authority for:
a) ensuring that the management system conforms to the requirements of this document;
b) reporting on the performance of the management system to top management.

Explanation

The intent of the clause on organization roles, responsibilities and authorities is to assign responsibility and authority for the implementation of the management system requirements to relevant roles within the organization.

Top management is accountable for these responsibilities and authorities being assigned and communicated to the respective personnel carrying out those roles.
The responsibilities and authorities are communicated in accordance with the requirements of the Clause 7.4 Communication).
Demonstration of conformance to the requirements of the Management Systems Standard is conducted in accordance with the requirements of Clause 9.2 Internal audit.
Performance reporting is conducted in accordance with the requirements of Clause 9.3 Management review.
